At the German Historical Institute scholars work on a wide range of topics: we research Italian history and music history from the early Middle Ages to the present day, as well as the history of German-Italian relations. Interdisciplinary cooperation and transnational and global historical perspectives are central to our work. Southern Europe and the Mediterranean are a specific area of focus. Exploring Italian and Vatican source materials also brings topics to light that extend beyond this horizon.

Our projects thrive on international and interdisciplinary cooperation. They relate to current debates on research theories and methods. In this way, we open up new research perspectives and continuously expand the institute's areas of focus.

We have been involved in digital humanities for a long time, and develope computer-assisted methods and resources for the digital humanities. An important part of the repertories and editions of our traditional basic research is now also available in digital form.

Our institute offers qualification positions for academic staff and funding opportunities for young researchers. With its archives and library specialising in history and music history, it offers excellent conditions for researchers, complemented by the wealth of archives, libraries and research institutions in the Italian capital, in the Vatican and in Italy as a whole.
