Thomas Hofmann, born in 1962, studied Latin, Greek, Byzantine Philology and History at the Universities of Würzburg and Siena. He completed his studies in 1989 with an MA degree in Classical Philology and Byzantine Studies, and passed the First State Exam the same year. In 1994, he obtained a PhD in Medieval History. Following a legal traineeship he worked as academic librarian in the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg library. In 1998, he assumed the position of head librarian at the German Historical Institute in Rome. Since 2017, he has been working as academic librarian and research fellow at the German Historical Institute in Rome. In October 2021 he became editor of the "Repertorium Germanicum".
