Dr. Christian Alexander Neumann

Researcher at Heidelberg University (Partnership Positions Programme of the Max Weber Foundation) 2023–2024
Christian Neumann was born in 1984; from 2004 to 2010 he studied history (focus on medieval history) and Romance languages (focus on Italian) at the University of Bochum (Ruhr-Universität Bochum), earning a bachelor’s and a master's degree; during this period he studied abroad at the University of Padua (Università degli Studi di Padova) from 2007 to 2008 and was an awardee of the German Academic Scholarship Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes) from 2005 to 2010. From 2010 to 2011 he was scientific auxiliary and collaborator at the Centre for Mediterranean Studies (Zentrum für Mittelmeerstudien – ZMS) of the University of Bochum; from 2011 to 2014 he a was Ph.D.-scholarship holder of the German Academic Scholarship Foundation and also of the Centro Tedesco di Studi Veneziani). From 2014 to September 2017 he was scientific collaborator at the Faculty of History of the University of Heidelberg (Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg) under the chair for medieval history Prof. Dr. Nikolas Jaspert. In 2015 he completed his Ph.D. with a thesis on the relations between the Republic of Venice and the Crown of Aragon in the Late Middle Ages (fields of research: diplomacy, trade and piracy), published in 2017 under the title "Venedig und Aragon im Spätmittelalter (1280–1410). Eine Verflechtungsgeschichte". From 2017 to 2023 Christian Neumann was a scientific collaborator at the German Historical Institute in Rome in the field of medieval history with the research project Old Rulers of the Middle Ages. Kings, Doges and Popes. A Contribution to Gerontological Medieval Studies. Since July 2023 he has been a researcher at Heidelberg University (Partnership Positions Programme of the Max Weber Foundation).
