This volume's transnational, comparative approach seeks to open up a fresh perspective on self-interpretations of the past in Germany and Italy with regards to film production and the cinematographic relationship between the two countries, from 1945 to 1955. For numerous artists and intellectuals from the German-speaking world, Italy once again became a place of longing and refuge in the post-war period. This also applies to Bernd Alois Zimmermann (1918–1970), who in 1957 was the first composer to receive a scholarship at the reopened German Academy Villa Massimo in Rome. Further stay in Rome would profoundly influence Zimmermann on both a biographical and artistic level.more

The study addresses the experiences of Italian Jewish women in the context of Italian politics and society after the birth of the unified liberal State, during the First World War and during the fascist dictatorship up until 1945.
