War diary of the German General to the Italian Eighth Army High Command – Italian edition
Dr. Gerhard Kuck (in collaboration with PD Dr. Thomas Schlemmer)
The war diary of the German General to the Italian Eighth Army High Command gains its importance from the fact that the war diary of the Italian Army High Command had gone missing. Although until recently numerous studies in Italy have been dealing with the Italian participation in the "Operation Barbarossa", the German invasion of the Soviet Union, little attention has been paid to the relevant German sources. Only the minor part of the diaries regarding the battles and the retreat of the troops encircled by the Red Army in the midst of January 1943 had already been published in Italian in 1991. However, concerning the Italian forces, the notes written in those days are of only low informational value. An Italian edition of the whole diary, accompanied by an accurate introduction and scientific commentary, will be useful for the transfer of sources and research approaches between German and Italian historiography, closing a gap and opening up a number of new perspectives.
