Transnational Nineteenth-Century Compositional Strategies. The 'school' of Salieri

Dr. Elisa Novara

A comparative analysis of early nineteenth-century compositional strategies reveals certain constants that suggest there must have been a 'European' compositional koiné in the teaching of music – contrary to the traditional notion of different national styles. The research project aims to highlight such constants in the history of composition.
The present investigation begins with a reconstruction of the teaching methods employed by Antonio Salieri (1750–1825) with his approximately 40 students (Angermüller 1971). Which other teachers worked in the same way? Once the results are integrated into a "linked open data" database, the next step will be to pave the way for a comparative study of compositional strategies. This should not be limited to the great national composers, rather it should trace the roots of a transcultural composing tradition.
