Collection of sources on the commune of Rome in the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance

Since 1998, as a permanent member of the DHI Rome, Andreas Rehberg has been engaged in the collection of urban Roman sources, thus continuing a traditional research area of the institute, which is linked to local and transregional Italian urban history. After a systematic review of relevant archival inventories in the early years of the project, a number of source materials, that had received little attention from the Italian side, were selected for closer examination by virtue of Rome's particular cultural significance beyond the city walls, in German and European history. In this light issues have emerged, such as the presence of consecration candidates from all over Europe at the Curia, the German clergy in Roman sources, forms of religious devotion in Rome, the pursuit of university qualifications at the Curia around 1500 and the testimonies to the outbreak of the Great Western Schism of 1378. External studies have been dedicated to the charismatic popular leader Cola di Rienzo (1313–1354), whose ambitious political visions in the fight against the tyrants even inspired Richard Wagner. Among the forms of communal archived materials, typical of other Italian city-states and often preserved to this day, are the city council records (riformanze), in Rome’s possession since 1515. Annotated registers were published for the oldest surviving volume created by the Senate writer Pietro Rutili between the years 1515 to 1526. After an initial edition in the institute’s QFIAB journal, 2000–2002, an extended Italian version was published in 2010. In 1521/22 a number of Flemish and German confidants of Hadrian VI of Utrecht were registered as new citizens, proving once again the dependence of the municipal administration on the papal lord of the city and growing immigration pressure on the increasingly cosmopolitan city of Rome.
The research project also touches upon the topic of "Heraldry in Rome in the context of 16th century Europe" and is relevant not only for the Early Modern period, but also for the Middle Ages. At its center is a manuscript containing 3575 coats of arms, attributed for the first time to the learned papal historian and antiquarian Alonso Chacón (or Ciacconio) (1530–1599). This "encyclopedia" on European Heraldry offers numerous interdisciplinary aspects to be considered for the reconstruction of the diverse tendencies of the flourishing heraldry of its time.
A partial aspect of the theme of heraldry led, in 2013, to the launch of the project Genealogy and Heraldry in the context of "Linceo" Federico Cesi (1585–1630): An example of the reception of the Middle Ages around 1600” in cooperation with the Accademia dei Lincei and the Bibliotheca Hertziana.
