Ursprünglich als Waffe im interkonfessionellen Diskurs eingesetzt, wurde das Schreiben von katholischer Kirchengeschichte im Laufe des "langen nachtridentinischen Jahrhunderts" zunehmend zum Störfaktor römisch-kurialer Zentralisierungsversuche.
